A skateboarder of mass 37.8 kg is riding her 3.30-kg skateboard at a speed of 5.35 m/s. She jumps backward off?
A skateboarder of mass 37.8 kg is riding her 3.30-kg skateboard at a speed of 5.35 m/s. She jumps backward off her skateboard, sending the skateboard forward at a speed of 8.5 m/s. At what speed is the skateboarder moving when her feet hit the ground?
This looks pretty simple problem.. but first i don’t even understand the problem itself..
I need some help for this.
Its conservation of momentum. She will still be going forward but not as quick as 5.35 m/s
Momentum before jumping = momentum after jumping
(37.8 + 3.30 ) . 5.35 = (3.30 . 8.5) + ( 37.8 . V)
219.885 = 28.05 + 37.8 V
V = 5.075 m/s
This is assuming that all speeds are relative to the ground – it is not clear that this is true for the skateboard when it is kicked forward – its speed relative to the ground might be 13.85 m/s but that would be misleading if that’s what questioner intended.
